A Skill, a Discipline, and Relentless Practice

In the Strategic Doing Talk on Friday, I introduced the ideas of skill, discipline, and practice. To illustrate these ideas, I shared my history as a competitive swimmer. When I was a teenager, I was a nationally ranked freestyle sprinter. I spent hours in the pool practicing 10 and 11 months a year.

This video gives you an idea of all the critical skills for an efficient freestyle. A skill is the ability to behave effectively when we act. The video outlines most of the skills that a freestyler needs to develop.

Together, these skills represent the discipline of freestyle swimming.

The only way to master these skills is through relentless practice.

The same is true of Strategic Doing. Ten cognitive skills define your ability to design and guide a conversation that dramatically improves the probability of developing a high-performance collaboration.
